The night air was deadly cold and the wind was like a flat blade of ice.
The sky was a cloudless black, except for the moon, shimmering with pale light. The icy mass of darkness reigned over the town. Suddenly, a brilliant speck of light appeared in the sky. The star, or perhaps, some kind of an object, began to increase in size, illuminating the dusk. Immediately growing to the height of a lamppost standing by, it landed on the ground with a thud. As the stunning light deceased, it unveiled its form; it was a round spaceship, with checkered wings jutting out from the sides. A violet fume arose from the top with a puff, and a door appeared. With a creak, the door opened, and there was an elf-sized creature. The creature was rather eerie; its skin was a mixture of olive and emerald hue, its ears were twice as long as an average human's ears, and its snout reminded of a boar with protruding teeth. The most sinister part of all, however, was its giant eyes, wide with curiosity and nervousness. The creature hopped out, munching and growling. It quickly looked asides, as if to check there was nobody who would attack him. Then it saw a house at the end of a winding road, which was flashing with different colors. Lured by the flamboyant lights, it galloped across the snow-white ground to the house.
The house was having a party, celebrating a girl's 20th birthday. A dance party was going on inside the girl's home, and a huge disco ball on the ceiling was casting rainbow colors. Girls with sparkling dresses and boys with sleek suits were carousing and prancing around, warmed up by the bottles of beers. The creature was inside, and hopping around, was befuddled by the tall, raucous humans.
Where are the men in inflated astronaut attires? The creature thought. Too drunk and busy having fun, people did not seem to notice the mysterious creature at all. Rolling its eyes sideways rapidly, the creature vigorously searched for its gem. That was its whole purpose of being sent to Earth all the way from Mars: to retrieve the gem that was stolen by humans in spacesuits. Creatures in Mars believed that the gem's power held everything in place, such as the stars and the planets. They believed that without the gem in Mars, the order in nature would be destroyed soon and the universe would return to chaos. The creature checked every inch of the leathery carpet floor, hissing and sniffing. It peered into a room with snoring people drenched in alcohol. It examined another room with all sorts of gourmet desserts that was crowded with munching and crunching people. It squinted at hallways where couples were tightly attached to each other, hands clasped. No matter how hard it searched, it did not catch a glimpse of the gem. Then, the party atmosphere suddenly turned quiet. The birthday girl had walked up to a podium. And there it was, right in the middle of the girl's necklace that was gracefully hanging down over her velvety dress, the gem.
As the creature had imagined, the gem was beautiful; glistening navy liquid was swaying inside a crystal case. Excited, it stealthily crawled over the floor so that nobody would hear its rustle and scream at its strange appearance. Fortunately, the girl's booming voice on microphone had grasped the attention of the people. The creature reached the wooden podium, and looked up at the girl.
"... and I would like to thank Connor, my dearest brother and a spectacular NASA astronaut, who has given me this diamond, the most beautiful gem I have ever seen in my life."
The girl took out her necklace and lifted it up for the audience. A cheering roar of whistles bursted out from everywhere, and clapping sounds rang through the house. The creature waited. As it had wished, the girl put down her necklace on the podium. Swiftly, it pulled down the chain of the necklace, securely held the gem in his wide-stretched fingers, and paved its way through the feet of bustling crowds.
As soon as it was outside the house, the creature scurried to its spaceship, cackling with joy and relief. Even the shivery snow and frosty ground could not stop it from smiling with happiness. It did not know, however, that it had left its triangular footprints on the snow.
When it reached its vehicle, it jumped up to the door and started the engine. Once again, the ship began to brighten, and eventually to a degree where eyes would hurt to stare. The spaceship flew up, and ascending, grew smaller and smaller, and finally, disappeared into the darkness.
